Most campsites run June through August or September; a few near Reykjavík and larger towns stay open longer. Highland campsites — Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk, Hveravellir — only open once their access road clears, usually mid-June to early July, and some need an F-road 4×4. Facilities vary hugely: town sites often have electricity hookups and hot showers, while remote sites can be a flat gravel patch with one toilet block — check the facilities list on each campsite's page. Booking is mostly first-come, first-served; only a handful of popular sites take reservations. Remember that sleeping in a vehicle outside a designated campsite has been illegal in Iceland since 2015 — plan your stops, don't assume you can pull over for the night.

Campsite
questions
Can I wild camp in Iceland?
No, not in a vehicle. Sleeping in a car, van or camper outside a designated campsite has been illegal since a 2015 law change. On foot, with a small tent, in open uncultivated land, short-stay wild camping is still generally allowed — but check local signage, since many popular areas now restrict even that.
Do I need to book campsites in advance?
Not usually — most Icelandic campsites are first-come, first-served. A handful of popular highland sites (Landmannalaugar, Þórsmörk) get busy in July and August and are worth arriving early for. Only bookable sites in this list take reservations.
When are Icelandic campsites open?
Most open June through August or September; a handful in Reykjavík and larger towns run longer. Highland campsites only open once their access road (often an F-road) opens, typically mid-June to early July.
What facilities do Icelandic campsites have?
It varies a lot. Town campsites usually have electricity hookups, hot showers and toilets. Highland and remote campsites can be as basic as a flat gravel patch with a single toilet block. Check the facilities list on each campsite's page before you go.
Is there a camping card that saves money?
Yes — the Camping Card covers a set number of nights across a network of member campsites for one flat price. It only pays off if you're camping most nights of a multi-week trip; do the math against per-night prices first.
Can I camp anywhere near a waterfall or beauty spot for free?
No. Camping outside a designated site in a vehicle is illegal nationwide, and many scenic areas now also restrict tent camping to protect fragile vegetation. Use a designated campsite — this list is mapped by region so there's almost always one nearby.
