About
A green, spacious site in the middle of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, with a grocery store and swimming pool a short walk away. Open March to November. It rents sleeping-bag cabins for up to four, and its service building runs to ten toilets, a kitchen, showers and laundry.
You're camping in the middle of the village here, with Kjarval's grocery store and Systrakaffi as neighbours and the pool within walking distance. The ground is green and there's plenty of room to spread out. The service building is the main draw: a kitchen, showers, washing machine, dryer, clotheslines and ten toilets. Electric hookups run throughout, WiFi is free, and if you'd rather not pitch a tent, there are cabins that sleep up to four in sleeping-bag style. Kirkjubæjarklaustur works well as a South Iceland base. Trails climb to Systrafoss waterfall and the Landbrotshólar area, while Laki Craters, Eldgjá, Langisjór, Skaftafell and Jökulsárlón are all day-trip range. The place carries a long history too — a convent stood here from 1186 to 1550, and Reverend Jón Steingrímsson's 1783 Fire Sermon is tied to the lava that stopped near the village.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
