Reykjavík Area tonight
Most visitors see their first aurora somewhere around Reykjavík — but you have to leave the city lights behind. Here's exactly where to go and when.
Where to watch in Reykjavík Area
Grótta Lighthouse
A 15-min drive west of downtown. Flat headland with near-total darkness to the north. The classic Reykjavík aurora shot.
Heiðmörk Nature Reserve
Large forested reserve 20 min south-east of the city. Multiple pull-outs and open meadows. Much darker than Grótta on weekends.
Perlan / Öskjuhlíð hill
Only 5 min from downtown, but elevated enough to see past the worst light pollution. Backup option for when you're too tired to drive.
How to get there
Tips for this region
Drive 15–20 km out — Grótta, Heiðmörk, or north past Mosfellsbær. The city wash-out is real.
Check aurora forecast and cloud cover separately — Reykjavík has its own microclimate and can be clouded in while the south coast is clear.
Tour buses pile up at Grótta on strong nights. For solitude, pick Heiðmörk instead.
In Reykjavík, the weather moves fast. A rental car is how you keep up.
