Are these webcams really live?
Yes — each card plays the camera's own public stream, the same one you would see on the operator's site; where an operator only allows playback on their own pages, the card takes you straight there. We do not host, proxy or delay any video.
Why is a camera sometimes offline or dark?
Most feeds run outdoors year-round, so an offline camera is usually maintenance, a connectivity drop, or — for a few — genuine nighttime darkness in winter. Try again later, or pick another camera in the same region.
Can I use these to check road or weather conditions before driving?
They help, but they're a snapshot of one spot, not a route. Pair them with the live road status and forecasts on our alerts page before any drive, especially in winter.
Can I see the northern lights on a webcam?
On a clear, active night the dark-sky cameras — Þingvallavatn, Skjaldbreiður, the lighthouse and nature cams — can catch the lights. For an actual forecast by region, use our aurora forecast — a camera alone won't tell you if tonight is a good night.
