How often does this dashboard update?
The page re-fetches every source at most every 15 minutes (server-side revalidation). Weather warnings, earthquakes and volcano levels come straight from the Icelandic Met Office public API; roads from Vegagerðin via umferdin.is; the aurora Kp index from NOAA. Any feed that doesn't respond is labelled "temporarily unavailable" — nothing is guessed or shown stale.
Is it safe to drive in Iceland in winter?
Yes, but check this page and umferdin.is before every drive. Route 1 is mostly paved and maintained, but highland F-roads close completely from October to late June. Carry chains, a phone charger, and warm layers. Rental insurance should cover gravel and ice damage.
What do the yellow, orange and red warning colors mean?
They are the Met Office's official CAP warning levels. Yellow = be aware, weather that can disrupt plans. Orange = be prepared, dangerous conditions likely — reconsider travel in the affected region. Red = take action, extreme weather; roads often close and travel is strongly discouraged.
What should I do in a volcanic eruption emergency?
Follow safetravel.is and the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is). Stay away from active eruption zones — toxic gases are the main danger, not lava. An elevated alert level on this page means unrest above background, not necessarily an eruption; follow evacuation orders immediately if issued.
Do small earthquakes mean an eruption is coming?
Not by themselves — Iceland records thousands of small quakes a year. We list quakes above magnitude 3 from the last 24 hours. Sustained swarms in volcanic zones are what the Met Office watches; their volcano alert levels (also on this page) are the authoritative signal.
How do I check if the aurora will be visible tonight?
Check the Kp index on this page and the cloud cover for your region. You need reasonably dark, clear skies — September through April is aurora season. Our aurora forecast page has the full 8-region breakdown with visibility scores.
