How to use this page

Plan with the map, decide with the table. The map shows where each of the 51 F-roads runs — which region it crosses, what it connects, how far from the Ring Road it reaches. The table is the live word on whether you can actually drive it today. A road that is open all summer on average can still close overnight after rain, and the reverse — an early opening in a warm year — is just as common. That is why there is no reliable printed F-road map with opening dates: the dates move every year. The official opening record tells you what to expect; this page tells you what is true right now.

A road missing from the table is not open — it is unreported, and we leave it out rather than guess. Two roads deserve a special note: Kjölur is designated road 35 without the F prefix, so it never appears in the F-road feed — our F35 page covers it. If the F-number system is new to you, start with what F-roads are — the short version is that every one legally requires 4WD, 2WD is illegal on them, and no rental insurance covers river-crossing damage. Fords are the real skill: read the river-crossing guide before your first one.

How current is the status on this page?
It comes from Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road Administration) — the authority that physically opens and closes these roads — and we refresh it through the day. The timestamp on the table is the feed’s own most recent report time, not a number we invent. Treat it the way Icelanders treat road.is: check the morning you drive, then again before committing to a long crossing.
Why is a road missing from the status table?
Because Vegagerðin isn’t reporting it right now. We deliberately leave unreported roads out rather than paint them green — absence from the feed is not the same as open. If your route is missing, check road.is directly or ask rangers locally before driving.
What does “Open to 4x4s” mean?
It is our translation of Vegagerðin’s “Fært fjallabílum” — passable for mountain vehicles. That is the normal open state for an F-road, not a warning: every F-road legally requires 4WD at all times, so “open” always means open to 4WDs only.
Where is F35 (Kjölur)?
Vegagerðin designates Kjölur as road 35 — no F prefix — so it never appears in the F-road feed this table reads. Everyone still calls it F35, and our F35 page covers the route itself, including its opening record.
Can I drive a closed F-road if it looks fine?
No. Driving a closed road in Iceland is illegal regardless of vehicle, it is enforced, and it voids your rental insurance completely. Closures usually mean soft ground that your tyres would destroy for the whole season, or a river running too high — neither is visible from the start of the road.
Does this map show river levels?
No — no public feed measures the fords on F-roads. River crossings rise with rain and warm afternoons (glacial melt), so cross early in the day, watch someone local cross first, and read our river-crossing safety guide before your first ford. Rental insurance never covers water damage.
