Built in Iceland, for people travelling Iceland.
Map of Iceland is a free travel platform made by someone who lives here. Live road conditions. Real aurora forecasts. 13,000+ places mapped. Honest recommendations — no inflated star ratings, no hidden sponsorships.
Why this exists
Planning an Iceland trip usually means opening ten different sites — one for weather, one for road conditions, one for the northern lights forecast, another for webcams, another for "top 10 waterfalls" lists written by people who've never been here.
That's fine, but it's a hassle. And most of those sites hide the important information behind ads or force you to sign up.
Map of Iceland pulls it all into one place. The weather widget on a waterfall page shows that waterfall's current weather. The road status shows the actual route to that waterfall. The aurora forecast shows where in Iceland to chase the lights tonight, not a generic global Kp number.
What makes it different
- Live data on every page that matters — not links out to other services, but the data embedded in-context.
- Mobile-first — this is a phone tool, not a desktop brochure.
- Honest economics — the site is free. We earn a small commission if you book a rental car or tour through our partners (KeyCar for cars, Tourdesk for tours). Using our links keeps the site free for everyone. If a partner sucks, we'll say so and recommend alternatives.
- Real photos and real data — not AI-generated stock images. Wikimedia Commons, user uploads, and our own photography. GPS-accurate coordinates, not approximate "near X".
- Built with AI assistance, not written by AI — Claude helps with code, research, and data work. The voice, judgment, and recommendations are human.
Who's behind this
Žygimantas — based in Iceland. Not a tour operator, not a hotel owner, not a big travel company. Just someone who got tired of how fragmented Iceland's tourist information was, and decided to fix it.
The goal isn't to replace local guides or tour operators — it's to help people arrive prepared, find the places they actually want to visit, and support small Icelandic businesses along the way.
How we make money (transparently)
Map of Iceland earns commissions from:
- Car and camper rentals via KeyCar — using our discount code saves you 15% on the rental AND keeps this site running. Zero cost to you.
- Tours and activities via Tourdesk (launching soon) — same model.
- Nothing else, yet. No ads, no sponsored POI placements, no paid-to-promote reviews. If a page recommends something, it's because we genuinely think it's worth your time.
If the site ever adds a premium tier, utility core (map, live data, POIs) stays free forever. That's a promise.
What's next
The site is under active development. You might see rough edges, missing pages, or content that's "coming soon" — that's normal for April 2026. The plan:
- Finish all 13 category hubs (waterfalls, hot springs, glaciers, etc.) by early summer
- Individual pages for every major POI in Iceland by end of year
- Daily "Iceland Pulse" briefing starting autumn
- User-uploaded photos and reviews (no star-rating games)
- AI-powered trip planner that respects your budget and style
