About this vehicle

The Duster is the fleet's entry point into 4WD, and it's the car most people should actually book. Manual, five seats, proper four-wheel drive at a price barely above the 2WD cars. That single upgrade — 2WD to 4WD — is what unlocks the Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, and gravel roads the i10 simply can't do.

It's not a luxury car and doesn't try to be. The cabin's basic, the ride is a bit firm on rough gravel, but the drivetrain is genuinely capable and it's cheap to run. For travelers who want to get off the Ring Road without paying highlands-truck prices, this is the honest answer.

Manual transmission is worth noting if you're not used to it — Iceland's rental fleet still leans manual at the budget end, and the Duster is one of them.

Where it can take you

4WD makes gravel roads genuinely fine — Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, and most unpaved connector roads are within reach. In summer, some lighter F-roads open up (F208 in the south, F35 Kjölur), but this isn't a highlands truck: no unbridged river crossings, and steeper F-roads with deep fords are better left to a Land Cruiser.

Winter driving

Studded winter tyres are fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14) by Icelandic rental law, and the 4WD system genuinely helps on snow and ice. It's a solid winter Ring Road car. Highland F-roads are closed in winter regardless of vehicle, so that question doesn't apply — just watch for wind, which affects a lighter SUV more than a heavy truck.

Luggage & fuel

2 large suitcases plus 2 cabin bags fit with the rear seats up — enough for a couple or a small family traveling reasonably light.

Expect around 6–7 l/100km, whether you get the petrol or diesel variant on the lot — ask which fuel type your specific car takes at pickup. Either way it's efficient for a 4WD. Iceland's fuel prices run high; check live fuel prices on our gas stations map before a long drive.
