Common
questions

Is it safe to drive in Iceland in winter?
Yes, but check road.is and this page before every drive. Route 1 is mostly paved and maintained, but highland F-roads close completely from October to late June. Carry chains, a phone charger, and warm layers. Rental insurance should cover gravel and ice damage.
What are sneaker waves at Reynisfjara?
Powerful waves that surge much further up the beach than expected, knocking people off their feet and dragging them into freezing water. Several tourists have died. Never turn your back to the ocean, stay above the wet sand line, and check the wave data on this page before visiting.
How do I check if the aurora will be visible tonight?
Check the Kp index (we show it above from NOAA) and the cloud cover for your region. You need Kp 3+ and clear skies. September through April is aurora season. Go to our full aurora forecast page for an 8-region breakdown with visibility scores.
What should I do in a volcanic eruption emergency?
Follow safetravel.is and the Icelandic Met Office (vedur.is). Stay away from active eruption zones — toxic gases are the main danger, not lava. If you're near the Reykjanes Peninsula, check our live webcam above and follow evacuation orders immediately if issued.
How often is this data updated?
Weather and wave data refresh every time you load this page (from Open-Meteo). Road conditions come from the Icelandic Road Administration (umferdin.is). Aurora Kp is from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center. All sources are free, authoritative, and updated hourly or more frequently.
