South Coast tonight
The most-visited aurora corridor in Iceland. Vík, Jökulsárlón, and the black sand beaches all photograph brilliantly. Check coastal cloud first — the south coast is wetter than the north.
Where to watch in South Coast
Reynisfjara black sand beach
Dark sand, no light pollution, sea horizon to the south. The basalt columns and sea stacks are a great foreground. Keep well back from the waves — sneaker waves are real and fatal.
Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
Blue icebergs lit by aurora is the shot that fills Instagram feeds in winter. The lagoon faces north so the sky is directly above. Come after dark — the tourist coaches leave.
Skógafoss / Seljalandsfoss area
The waterfall spray catches aurora colours. Arrive before midnight when tour groups have cleared. Seljalandsfoss is lit at night — move back from it for a dark sky view.
How to get there
Tips for this region
South coast cloud rolls in from the Atlantic fast — always have a fallback plan 40 min north (Highlands edge) where it can be clear.
Jökulsárlón at 2am in winter is –10°C with wind chill. The diamonds on Diamond Beach are real but your hands will go numb fast.
Route 1 is plowed on the south coast but can ice over at night. Check umferdin.is road conditions before driving after dark.
The south coast stretches 300 km. A car is your aurora chase tool.
Tour buses do south coast aurora trips — but they pick one location and stay. With a car you follow the clear sky. Code mapoficeland saves 15% on KeyCar.
