Image & Photography Policy
Last updated: 20 April 2026
Map of Iceland uses a mix of original photography, licensed images, and publicly-available material — always credited where possible, always replaced on request. If you see a photo of yours and want it removed or attributed differently, email info@mapoficeland.is and we'll act within 24 hours, no questions asked.
Where our photos come from
Building a useful Iceland travel platform means showing what each place looks like — across roughly 13,000 points of interest. We source images in this order of preference:
- Original photography by us, our partners, or our community.
- Licensed images — purchased from photographers directly, from agencies, or via tourism-board press libraries.
- User contributions — uploaded by registered travellers under our community terms.
- Publicly-available material from sources such as Wikimedia Commons, Flickr Creative Commons, social media, news archives, and other Iceland-focused sites — always with visible credit, always linkable to the source where possible.
Where a photo is sourced from category 4, we treat it as the photographer's work, credit them publicly, and remove or replace immediately on request.
If you're a photographer
You retain copyright over your work. Our position is simple:
- If we have used a photo of yours and you'd like it credited differently, just ask. We'll update the credit line within 24 hours.
- If you'd like the photo removed, we'll remove it within 24 hours and replace it with another source. No legal back-and-forth needed — a single email is enough.
- If you'd like to license your photo formally so we can keep using it (with payment, if appropriate), we'd love that — email us and we'll discuss terms.
- If you'd like to contribute photos for credit + a backlink + ongoing exposure to our travel audience, we'd love that even more. We're building a long-term photography partnership programme — email us to be on the early list.
Takedown / removal request
If you believe we've used your photo without permission and want it removed, here is what to do:
- Email info@mapoficeland.is with the subject line "Image takedown".
- Include the URL of the page where the photo appears, and a link to the original source if possible (so we can verify).
- We'll remove the photo within 24 hours of your email and confirm by reply.
You don't need a lawyer. You don't need to file a formal DMCA notice (though we accept those too). One email is enough.
Using our original photos
For images that we've shot or commissioned ourselves (clearly credited "Photo: Map of Iceland" or similar), you're welcome to use up to 10 images for free if you follow these rules:
- Link back to the page on our site where the image appears.
- The link must be a do-follow link (no
rel="nofollow"). - Don't crop out or remove our credit if visible on the image.
- Don't redistribute the image as your own.
For more than 10 images, or for commercial / print use, please contact us first at info@mapoficeland.is.
User-uploaded photos
When registered travellers upload photos via the platform, they grant us a non-exclusive licence to display the photo on the site, attributed to their username. Uploaders retain copyright. They can request removal of their own uploaded content at any time from their account dashboard or by emailing us.
Editorial standards
- We aim for location-accurate imagery — a photo on the Seljalandsfoss page should show Seljalandsfoss, not a generic waterfall.
- We do not knowingly use AI-generated imagery to depict real Iceland locations.
- We do not use photos of identifiable private individuals without their consent.
- Photos showing dangerous behaviour (e.g. on cliff edges, near volcanic activity) are accompanied by clear safety messaging.
