When & how to drive Iceland's F-roads

F-roads only open once meltwater drops, usually mid-June to early July, and most close by September — a few of the toughest (Fjallabak, Askja) sometimes hold into early October if the weather cooperates. Every F-road legally requires 4WD; driving one in a 2WD car is illegal and voids your rental insurance outright. River crossings are never covered by any rental policy, even full-coverage plans — cross only where locals or rangers confirm it's safe, and never after heavy rain. Check road.is the morning you drive: conditions change fast, and a route open yesterday can be closed today. Beginners should start with an easier route like F35 (Kjalvegur) before attempting river-crossing roads like F210 or F249.

F-road
questions

Can I drive an F-road in a 2WD car?
No. F-roads legally require 4WD in Iceland. Driving one in a 2WD car is illegal and voids your rental insurance if you get stuck, crash, or damage the car.
Does rental insurance cover river crossings?
No. River-crossing damage is excluded from every rental insurance policy in Iceland, even full-coverage plans. If you drive into a river and the car is damaged, you pay for it.
When do F-roads open?
Most F-roads open mid-June to early July, once meltwater drops and the Icelandic Road Administration clears them. A few of the toughest routes (Fjallabak, Askja) sometimes open later. Always check road.is before you drive — opening dates shift year to year with the weather.
When do F-roads close for winter?
Most close in September, some by early October. Once closed, driving them is illegal regardless of vehicle — this is enforced, not a suggestion.
What car do I actually need?
It depends on the road. Easier routes like F35 (Kjalvegur) suit any 4WD. Routes with river crossings (F210, F249, F88) want a large or "super jeep" 4WD with high clearance. Check the car_min guidance on each F-road page before booking.
How do I check if an F-road is open right now?
road.is (Vegagerðin, the Icelandic Road Administration) publishes live road status. Check it the morning you drive — conditions change fast and a road open yesterday can close overnight after rain.
