About

Main eastern route to Askja. The full crossing goes all the way to Sprengisandur.

Central F910 is the loneliest road in Iceland. Hours without seeing anyone. That's either peaceful or scary. Know which one you are first.

The complete east-west crossing wasn't done regularly until the 1990s. Before that, expedition territory only. Parts are still barely traveled.

The full east-west is 150km with nothing. Carry 20 liters extra fuel minimum. No cell signal in the middle. Tell someone your plan.

Why go

East side passes the 2014-2015 Holuhraun lava - younger than most phones. Still warm. The central section is some of Europe's darkest skies for stars.

Photo tips

Holuhraun glows red at sunset from residual heat. Everything shimmers. Central section = zero light pollution. Incredible stars.

Wildlife

Almost nothing lives in the middle. Look for fox tracks in the ash near Askja. They hunt ptarmigan here somehow.

Reviews

Frequently
asked
questions

What car do I need for F910?
The minimum vehicle for F910 is "medium 4x4 east / large 4x4 west". A proper 4WD like the Dacia Duster or Suzuki Vitara covers "any 4x4" roads; pick something larger for "medium 4x4" routes. The rental section below has live prices — the code MAP gives 12% off.
Can I drive F910 in a 2WD car?
No. F910 legally requires 4WD, like every F-road in Iceland. Driving it in a 2WD car is illegal and voids your rental insurance if anything goes wrong.
When does F910 open?
F910 typically opens Late June and closes September. Always confirm on road.is before you drive — dates shift year to year with the weather.
How do I get to F910?
F910 (Austurleið) is located in Highlands. Check live road status on road.is before you drive — F-roads close without warning after rain or early snow.
Is river-crossing damage covered by rental insurance on F910?
No. River-crossing damage is excluded from every rental insurance policy in Iceland, even full-coverage plans. Cross only where locals or rangers confirm it’s safe.
