Iceland's fjords cluster in two regions: the Westfjords (Vestfirðir) in the far northwest and the Eastfjords (Austfirðir) down the east coast. The Ring Road threads through several Eastfjords; the Westfjords sit off it on Route 60. Roads follow the shoreline in and out, so driving around a fjord takes longer than the map suggests — fuel up when you can and check conditions before mountain passes.

When & how to visit Iceland's fjords

The Eastfjords are the easiest to reach — the Ring Road (Route 1) runs through several of them between Egilsstaðir and Höfn, and most of that route is paved. Seyðisfjörður, the ferry port to mainland Europe, sits over a mountain pass off the main road. The Westfjords are a bigger commitment: they branch off the Ring Road on Route 60, roads still turn to gravel in places, and passes can close in winter. Ísafjörður is the regional hub. Wherever you go, the drive around each inlet is longer than the straight-line distance, services are spread thin, and weather changes fast — fuel up when you can and check road conditions on road.is before you set out.

Fjord
questions

How many fjords does Iceland have?
Iceland has dozens of named fjords, concentrated in two regions: the Westfjords (Vestfirðir) in the northwest and the Eastfjords (Austfirðir) in the east. This page maps the named fjords with driving notes, region and directions.
Where are the Westfjords and Eastfjords?
The Westfjords are the large peninsula in the far northwest, off the Ring Road via Route 60. The Eastfjords run down the east coast and the Ring Road (Route 1) threads through several of them between Egilsstaðir and Höfn.
How long does it take to drive around a fjord?
Longer than the map distance suggests. Fjord roads hug the shoreline all the way in and back out, so a fjord that is a few kilometres across as the crow flies can be a 30–60 minute drive around by road. Plan extra time in the Westfjords especially.
Are the roads in the fjords paved?
Many are, but not all. The Ring Road through the Eastfjords is paved. In the Westfjords several stretches are still gravel, and some passes close in winter. Check live road conditions before you drive and fuel up when you can — services are spread out.
When is the best time to visit the fjords?
June to September for the most reliable road access, especially in the Westfjords. Winter driving is possible on the main Eastfjords route but mountain passes and gravel sections can close on short notice. Always check road.is / vegagerdin conditions the day you drive.
Which fjord towns are worth stopping in?
Ísafjörður is the main Westfjords hub. On the east side, Seyðisfjörður (the ferry port and arts town), Borgarfjörður Eystri (puffins at Hafnarhólmi), and Reyðarfjörður all sit at the head of their fjords. Each has fuel, food and a place to stay.
