Iceland's longest fjord at 60km, cutting deep into the north. Akureyri sits at its head, making this fjord central to North Iceland tourism. The sheltered waters are excellent for whale watching - humpbacks and other species feed in the fjord. Several operators run tours from Dalvík and Hauganes. Driving the fjord's edges takes you through small fishing villages and past views that stop you in your tracks. The east side road (toward Grenivík) is particularly scenic. The fjord's depth kept it ice-free when others froze, making Akureyri one of Iceland's historically important ports. Today it provides the calm waters for Iceland's maritime heritage to continue.

The northernmost town in Iceland at the end of a long, narrow fjord. Once the herring capital of the Atlantic. The fjord is dramatic - mountains dropping straight to water, the town squeezed onto a small flat area at the shore. Winter isolation built the community character. In the herring era, thousands of seasonal workers packed this fjord. When the fish disappeared, most people left. The museum tells the story brilliantly. Recent years brought road tunnels that make Siglufjörður less isolated. The music scene and folk festival thrive. The fjord setting remains spectacular.
