Iceland Mountain Huts

21 huts mapped2 regionsBook via huts.isSeason: late Jun–early Sep

Iceland's mountain huts are simple, warden-run shelters along the highland trails — you book a bunk, bring a sleeping bag and food, and share a kitchen. Most sit on the famous multi-day routes: the Laugavegur (Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk) and Fimmvörðuháls huts sell out months ahead for the short late-June-to-early-September season. Booking is through huts.is; many huts are reached only on an F-road that needs a 4×4, or on foot. Check the forecast and safetravel.is before you set out.

When & how to use Iceland's mountain huts

The hut system is what makes multi-day hiking in Iceland's interior possible. Most huts cluster on the headline trails — the Laugavegur from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk (roughly 55 km over 2–4 days) and the Fimmvörðuháls crossing to Skógar — plus scattered shelters across the southern highlands. You book a bunk in advance through huts.is, bring your own sleeping bag and food, and share a kitchen; a warden is usually on site in the summer season (late June to early September) and is a good source on trail conditions. Many huts are reached only on an F-road that legally needs a 4×4 and opens for a few months a year, or on foot. Weather in the highlands turns fast and river crossings can be dangerous — check the forecast and safetravel.is, submit a travel plan, and tell someone your route before you go.

Mountain hut
questions

How do I book a mountain hut in Iceland?
Most huts are run by touring associations and booked through huts.is (the Icelandic Touring Association / Ferðafélag Íslands system) or the operator directly. Reserve online in advance — popular huts on the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls trails fill up months ahead for the summer season. Payment and a booking confirmation are usually required before you arrive.
What do I need to bring to a mountain hut?
Huts provide mattresses but not bedding, so bring a sleeping bag; a liner adds warmth. Pack your own food and a stove — most huts have a shared kitchen but no shop. Bring layers for cold nights, a headtorch, and cash or a card for the warden. Rubbish must be carried out.
When are the huts open?
The main highland hut season is roughly late June to early September, when access roads are clear and wardens are on site. Outside that window some huts are locked, others are open but unserviced and unheated, and the F-roads to reach them may be closed. Always confirm the hut is open and book before you rely on it.
Do I need a 4WD to reach the huts?
It depends on the hut. Some sit at trailheads reachable on a normal road; many highland huts are on an F-road that legally requires a 4×4 and only opens in summer, and several are reached only on foot along a multi-day trail. Check the access notes and live road conditions for each hut before you drive.
What is the Laugavegur trail?
Laugavegur is Iceland’s best-known multi-day hike, running roughly 55 km from Landmannalaugar to Þórsmörk over 2–4 days. Hikers stay in a chain of huts (or camp beside them) along the route — Hrafntinnusker, Álftavatn, Hvanngil, Emstrur and others. Book the huts well ahead; they are among the first to sell out.
Is it safe to hike between the huts?
The huts make remote Iceland accessible, but the terrain does not forgive mistakes: weather changes fast, river crossings can be dangerous, and snow lingers on high passes into summer. Check the forecast and safetravel.is, submit a travel plan, tell someone your route, and carry proper gear. Do not push on in bad weather to make a booking.
