F208 - Northern Fjallabak route through Landmannalaugar. Colorful rhyolite mountains, hot springs. River crossings. One of most scenic F-roads.

Fjallabaksleið syðri

F210 - Southern Fjallabak route. Alternative to F208. Less traffic, more remote.

Þórsmerkurvegur

F249 - Road to Þórsmörk valley. Famous difficult river crossing at Krossá. Many vehicles get stuck. Experienced drivers only.

Landmannaleið

F225 (Landmannaleið) is a western approach to Landmannalaugar, rated medium difficulty and requiring at least a medium 4x4. It connects into the F208 (Fjallabaksleið nyrðri) network and carries less traffic than the main route. Early-season snowmelt raises river levels on this road, so July–August is the safer window on record.

Öldufellsleið

F232 (Öldufellsleið) is a medium-difficulty highland road on the South Coast, open from late July to early September and requiring at least a medium 4x4. It branches off F210 and includes a river crossing where the track runs directly through the water below a waterfall. Rental insurance does not cover F-road damage, and the crossing changes with the season — check current conditions before you commit to it.

Álftavatnskrókur

F233 (Álftavatnskrókur) is rated extreme difficulty and requires a super jeep — it's not accessible to standard 4x4 rentals. It branches off F210 in the South Coast highlands and includes the Syðri-Ófæra river crossing, which regularly stops even super jeeps. On record, it opens later and closes earlier in the season than most F-roads nearby.

Landmannaleið

F225 (Landmannaleið) is a western approach to Landmannalaugar, rated medium difficulty and requiring at least a medium 4x4. It connects into the F208 (Fjallabaksleið nyrðri) network and carries less traffic than the main route. Veiðivatnaleið

F228 (Veiðivatnaleið) is a medium-difficulty road on the South Coast leading to the Veiðivötn fishing lakes, an area dotted with crater lakes. It requires at least a medium 4x4, crosses two clear-water rivers, and has sandy stretches that slow driving down.

Jökulheimaleið

F985 - Access to Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon area interior.

Haukadalsvegur

F333 (Haukadalsvegur) starts at Geysir and runs through one of the few forested stretches on any F-road. It's rated easy, open to any 4x4, and has just one small stream crossing — a common recommendation as a first F-road.

Hagavatnsvegur

F335 (Hagavatnsvegur) leads to the glacier lake Hagavatn and the waterfall Leynifoss, rated medium difficulty and requiring at least a medium 4x4. There's a mountain cabin roughly halfway (around 4,000 ISK/night on record) and a glacial river crossing near the end.

Hlöðuvallavegur

F337 (Hlöðuvallavegur) circles a mountain through a boulder field on the South Coast, rated medium difficulty and requiring at least a medium 4x4. No river crossings are noted — the boulders themselves are the obstacle.

Skjaldbreiðarvegur

F338 (Skjaldbreiðarvegur) runs under a power line across the shield volcano Skjaldbreiður, rated medium difficulty and requiring at least a medium 4x4. It has wide, braided river crossings that shift from year to year, so there's no single fixed route through the water.
