About this vehicle

The i10 is a city car, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. Four seats, manual gearbox, 2WD. If your trip is Reykjavík, the Golden Circle, and the South Coast on paved roads, it does the job for less than any other car in the fleet.

It's small enough to park anywhere in the capital and light on fuel, which matters more here than most places — Iceland's petrol prices are among the highest in Europe. What it won't do is take you off tarmac. No gravel detours, no F-roads, no highlands.

Think of it as the trip-starter car: fine for a long weekend or a Ring-Road-adjacent loop that sticks to Route 1. If your plans widen to Snæfellsnes or the Westfjords, you'll want a 4WD instead.

Where it can take you

The i10 is a 2WD car built for paved roads: Route 1, the Golden Circle, and city driving. It handles good gravel at low speed if you must, but F-roads are illegal in a 2WD — you'll void your insurance and risk a fine if a ranger checks. Stick to tarmac and you'll have no issues.

Winter driving

Fine for Reykjavík and short paved trips in calm weather. Icelandic rental law requires studded winter tyres from Nov 1 to Apr 14, so the i10 is properly shod for the season — but it's still a small, light car. In a storm or on an icy Ring Road stretch, a heavier 4WD handles better. Check the forecast before a long winter drive in this one.

Luggage & fuel

Tight. Realistically one large suitcase and one cabin bag fit in the boot with the rear seats up — this is a car for two people traveling light, not four with full luggage.

Petrol, manual. Expect around 5.5 l/100km, the best economy in the fleet. With Iceland's fuel prices running high, that difference adds up over a week — check live fuel prices on our gas stations map before you set off.

Frequently
asked
questions

Can the Hyundai i10 handle the Ring Road?
It can drive Route 1, but we wouldn't recommend a full Ring Road circuit in it. The car is built for short, paved trips — for a multi-day loop with gravel detours, pick a 4WD.
Is the i10 okay for a Golden Circle day trip?
Yes — the Golden Circle is entirely paved and exactly the kind of trip this car is built for.
Does the i10 fit four adults with luggage?
It seats four, but with all seats full there's barely room for a couple of cabin bags. If everyone's bringing a suitcase, size up.
Can I take the i10 on gravel roads?
Short stretches of well-maintained gravel are fine at low speed. It's not built for long gravel routes like the Westfjords or Snæfellsnes — a 4WD crossover handles those better.
