The Tucson 4x4 sits comfortably above the budget crossovers — automatic gearbox, five seats, real four-wheel drive, and a cabin with noticeably more room than the Duster or Vitara. It's the car we'd point a family of four toward if they want comfort on long driving days without stepping up to highlands-truck pricing.

The automatic transmission matters more than it sounds like it should: after a week of gravel switchbacks and roundabouts in Reykjavík, not managing a clutch is a real quality-of-life upgrade for a lot of travelers.

It handles the South Coast, the Golden Circle, and gravel-heavy detours without drama, and has enough boot space that packing for a week doesn't turn into a puzzle.

Where it can take you

Gravel roads are comfortably within this car's range — Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, and the connector roads between them. In summer, lighter F-roads like F208 in the south and F35 Kjölur are realistic with sensible driving. It's not built for deep, unbridged river crossings — those routes belong to a proper highlands vehicle like the Land Cruiser.

Winter driving

A strong winter Ring Road choice. Studded tyres are fitted seasonally under Icelandic rental law (Nov 1–Apr 14), and the AWD system pairs well with the car's weight for stable handling on snow and ice. Highland F-roads close in winter regardless, so plan your route around the lowlands and coast in that season.

Luggage & fuel
