The Seal U is a plug-in hybrid, not a full EV — that distinction matters in Iceland, where charging infrastructure thins out fast once you're off the Ring Road. It runs on electric charge for short trips and switches to petrol automatically once the battery's spent, so range anxiety isn't part of the equation.

Automatic, five seats, AWD, and the newest vehicle in the fleet by a couple of years — it comes with the comfort and tech you'd expect from a 2026 model. For travelers who want a lower-emissions trip without the commitment of a pure EV rental in a country with patchy rural charging, it's a genuinely good middle ground.

AWD gives it real gravel-road capability alongside the hybrid drivetrain, so it doesn't trade off-road ability for efficiency.

Where it can take you

AWD handles gravel roads well — Westfjords, Snæfellsnes, and connector routes are all realistic. Lighter F-roads open up in summer with sensible driving (F208 south, F35 Kjölur). Like the other crossovers in the fleet, it's not built for unbridged river crossings — those routes need a proper highlands vehicle.

Winter driving

Studded winter tyres are fitted seasonally (Nov 1–Apr 14) under Icelandic rental law, and AWD helps on snow and ice. The hybrid battery can lose some efficiency in cold temperatures, same as any hybrid or EV — expect slightly more reliance on the petrol engine in winter, which is normal and not a fault.

Luggage & fuel

3 large suitcases with the rear seats up — the hybrid battery pack doesn't meaningfully eat into boot space, so it packs like a standard mid-size SUV.

Petrol plus optional charging — plug in overnight where you can and the first stretch of most days runs on electric charge, then it switches to petrol seamlessly.
