Updated 24 July 2026Driving

Every road Vegagerðin reports closed right now, in their own words — plus which roads close in which months, so a red line is never a surprise.

Short answer

When Iceland's roads close

Closures are not random — they follow a pattern by road type and season. This is the established shape of it, so a red line on the live list above is never a surprise.

Which roads close, when, and why
Road typeTypical closed windowWhy
Highland F-roadsClosed roughly Oct/Nov → mid-JuneSnow-blocked and legally shut until Vegagerðin opens each one after the melt; 4WD-only when open
Mountain passes on Route 1Short closures Nov → AprÖxnadalsheiði, Holtavörðuheiði, Möðrudalsöræfi close for hours in storms, reopened once safe
Öxi (road 939) & other shortcutsClosed Oct/Nov → MaySteep side roads close first and stay shut longest; the Ring Road detour stays open
Exposed coastal stretchesWind-related, any winter dayThe South Coast under Eyjafjöll and Kjölur-side roads see gust closures rather than snow
Reykjanes / Grindavík roadsVolcanic — no seasonRoad 43 and nearby roads can close at short notice during eruption episodes, not by month

Treat a closure as final. If Vegagerðin closes a road, driving around a barrier is illegal and dangerous, and rescue in an Icelandic winter storm is neither fast nor guaranteed. An open road can still be unsafe in high wind — pair this list with the weather warnings, and when in doubt, wait it out. 112 is the emergency number everywhere in Iceland.

Frequently
asked questions

How do I know if a road is closed in Iceland right now?
Check the live list at the top of this page — it is read directly from Vegagerðin (the Icelandic Road Administration) and shows every road they currently report closed or impassable, with their own wording. It refreshes every ten minutes. The authoritative source is road.is / umferdin.is; we mirror it and add plain-English labels and links.
Why do so many roads close in winter?
Two reasons: snow and wind. Mountain passes on Route 1 and the side roads over the heaths get snowed in or blown shut, and Vegagerðin closes them for safety until a plough clears them — usually a matter of hours, occasionally a day in a big storm. The highland F-roads are a separate case: they are legally closed all winter and only open after the summer melt.
Is a closed road the same as a dangerous road?
A closure is the authority saying do not drive here — treat it as final. But an open road can still be dangerous in high wind, especially for campers and high-sided vehicles, and that will not show as a closure. Always pair the closures list with the weather warnings before you set off, and re-check before each mountain pass.
What happens if a road closes while I am driving the Ring Road?
On the busy south-west it usually means a short wait or a signed detour. On the remote Vík–Höfn and east-fjord legs there is often no alternate road at all — you wait for it to reopen or turn back. That is why we scope live status per corridor on our can-I-drive pages, so you can see a closure coming before you commit to a long single-road stretch.
Do the F-roads count as “closed” in your list?
Only when Vegagerðin actively reports them closed. Out of season most F-roads simply are not in the feed because they are known to be shut — see our F-roads hub for opening dates and the live highland map for the ones currently reported. This page focuses on the paved network where an unexpected closure changes a normal day’s plan.
