Hörgsland

Position is Hörgsland's strong suit: it sits directly on Route 1, about 8 km east of Kirkjubæjarklaustur, with greenery around it to cut the wind. That makes it an easy staging point for the south coast's headline sights — Skaftafell, Vatnajökull National Park, the Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, and the black-sand beaches down the coast. On site you get electricity, toilets, showers, hot and cold water, and a restaurant. Wi-Fi and horse rental round things out, and the short description notes plenty of birdlife around the grounds. For anything else — groceries, a swimming pool, the liquor store — Kirkjubæjarklaustur is only a short drive back down the road. The season runs from May through the end of September.

Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
