Hólaskjól
About
Hólaskjól is a highland centre on Fjallabaksleið Syðri (F208) in Iceland's southern interior, with a campsite, a mountain lodge for sleeping-bag guests, and self-catering cabins. It's a base for Landmannalaugar, Eldgjá, and Lake Langisjór, and a service stop for hikers. Booking ahead is required. Open June to September.
Hólaskjól stands on the F208, the Fjallabaksleið Syðri route through the southern Highlands, and works as more than a campsite. There's a mountain lodge with sleeping-bag accommodation and self-catering cabins too, plus a restaurant in the summer months. It makes a natural base for Fjallabak, Landmannalaugar, Eldgjá, and Lake Langisjór. Campers get toilets, showers, charcoal grills, and picnic tables. The site also sells fishing permits for Langisjór and can arrange horse services and highland accommodation. For hikers it doubles as a service centre, running shuttle and luggage transfers for routes like the Laugavegur and Strútur trails and the walk from Sveinstindur. Note there's no electricity, and accommodation must be paid at least 14 days before you arrive. The season is June to the end of September.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
