Básar á Goðalandi (Þórsmörk)

Básar goes back to 1980, when Útivist laid out the campsite and later added the huts it now surrounds. It's one of Iceland's longer-standing sites, and a favourite with hikers heading into Þórsmörk. You can camp on open grass or find shelter among the birch and the natural dips in the ground. The walking is why people come. The Básahringur loop suits adults and children and gives wide views; the climb to Útigönguhöfði is for stronger hikers; Hvannárgil is one of the more rewarding walks in the area. Glaciers, eruption sites, and Þórsmörk's own landscapes ring the site. There's a reception with a small shop, a restaurant, toilets in the huts, and covered charcoal barbecue areas. Getting here runs along Route 249, then the F249, crossing glacial rivers on the way — 4x4s only, and check conditions first.
