Slyppugil is a small, quiet campsite in Þórsmörk, set by a gorge that glacial meltwater cut through basalt and volcanic rock. It sits about 250 m from Langidalur, on the Laugavegur and Fimmvörðuháls hiking routes. Facilities are basic — toilets, cold water, outdoor sinks and Wi-Fi. Open June to August.
Hikers are the main crowd here, and for good reason. The site sits right on two of Iceland's headline trails — Laugavegur, running from Landmannalaugar, and Fimmvörðuháls, linking Skógar and Þórsmörk — with more routes branching off. Langidalur is only about 250 metres away. The place takes its name from the gorge beside it, cut by glacial meltwater and lined with basalt and layered volcanic rock. Despite the raw geology, the sheltered ground stays surprisingly green with mosses, ferns and flowers. Facilities are pared back to toilets, cold water, outdoor sinks and Wi-Fi. It's part of a protected area, so Leave No Trace applies. The season is short: 1 June to the end of August.
