About
Hamrar is one of Iceland's largest campsites, set in the wooded hills above Akureyri on the edge of the Kjarnaskógur recreation area. It's divided into about 146 tree-lined pitches, with service houses, showers, a playground, boat rental on a small pond and a 15 km/h speed limit throughout.
Hamrar ranks among the biggest campsites in the country, spread across the hills above Akureyri on the edge of the Kjarnaskógur woods. It's carved into roughly 146 pitches, each a few thousand square metres, flat and well kept with trees around them. The facilities match the scale. Several service houses hold toilets, showers and dishwashing, and the cabin by the entrance adds showers, toilets, a washing machine, indoor dining and a computer with internet. There's a playground and a boat rental on a small pond to keep children busy, and traffic is capped at 15 km/h to keep it safe. Akureyri, the main town of North Iceland, is a short drive for anything else you need. It's a family site, with an age limit of 18 for unaccompanied guests.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
