Vaglaskógur is a forest campsite in Fnjóskárdalur near Akureyri, set inside Iceland's second-largest forest. It's spread over five sheltered grounds — some by the river Fnjóská — with electricity, showers and family playgrounds, and it's well set up for wheelchairs. Open in summer, with heated winter facilities too.
Vaglaskógur sits inside the second-largest forest in Iceland, in the Fnjóskárdalur valley. Camping among old trees means real shelter, and the site is split into five separate grounds, each with restroom access and good wheelchair provision. The layout gives you options. Stórarjóður is quiet and suits mobile homes; Hróarsstaðanes, the largest, runs along the river Fnjóská and packs in showers, laundry and a proper playground with a jumping pillow and climbing pyramid. Brúarlundur is the tent-and-nature choice, without electricity. Pre-booking is available across the site. Walking paths thread through the forest, home to birds like the rock ptarmigan and common snipe. Akureyri is 17 km away through the Vaðlaheiði tunnel, with golf just 3 km off. The summer season runs early June to the end of September, and heated winter facilities are on offer as well.
Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
