About
Barnafoss is a waterfall on the Skjálfandafljót river in North Iceland.
According to Jón Árnason's folk tales, the farm was formerly named Miðfell and the waterfall was correspondingly called Miðfellsfoss. Both the farm and the waterfall changed their names after an accident a little over three hundred years ago: children playing on the steep meadow that sloped down toward the river were thrown in a barrel down the slope and over the edge of the gorge, drowning in the falls, which thereafter became known as either Barnafellsfoss or Barnafoss.
