About
Systragil is a sheltered woodland campsite by the Systralækur stream in Fnjóskadalur valley, on Road 833 about 2 km from the Ring Road. Spread over three levels with electricity throughout, it has heated toilets, showers, cooking facilities and a playground. Akureyri, Goðafoss and Lake Mývatn are within easy driving distance.
Right across from the site is Vaglaskógur, Iceland's largest birch forest, threaded with walking trails — and the historic Þingmannaleið path climbs up through the Systragil gorge itself. In autumn the surrounding ground fills with berries and mushrooms. The campsite sits in sheltered woodland beside the Systralækur stream, laid out over three grassy levels with tree cover. It's a family-friendly place, taking tents, caravans, camper vans and motorhomes, with electricity in every area and a playground by the service building. Facilities are a step up from basic: heated toilets, showers, cooking facilities, hot and cold water, a washing machine, dryer and waste disposal. It's about 2 km off the Ring Road on Road 833, handy for Akureyri, Goðafoss, Húsavík and Lake Mývatn. Open late May to the end of September.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
