About

Beside the river Svartá near Varmahlíð, Bakkaflöt is a family-run site in North Iceland with mountain views and the river for a soundtrack. Going since 1987, it adds a swimming pool, hot tub, cabins, and river rafting to the pitches. Open all year, booking or drop-in.

Bakkaflöt has been family-run since 1987, and it's grown into more than a campsite. Alongside the pitches there's a 22-room guesthouse — en-suite cabins plus double and triple rooms with shared bathrooms and beds made up. The site sits right by the river Svartá, with mountains in view and running water for company. Toilets were replaced and the cooking facilities rebuilt in 2021; the cook-house seats twenty. Electricity, hot and cold water, a swimming pool, and a hot tub are all on hand. For anyone after a bit more, the owners run river rafting on the glacial rivers and sit-on-top kayaking down the Svartá. The campsite stays open all year and takes both bookings and drop-ins.

Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
