Ásbyrgi
About
Ásbyrgi is one of two campgrounds in the Jökulsárgljúfur national-park area, the other being Vesturdalur. It's large — 23 zones, 190 sites, room for around 500 people — and opens from late May until early November. A gate admits only registered vehicles, so it's booking-only, no drop-in.
This is a big, organised site: 23 numbered zones holding 190 pitches and up to about 500 people. Forty-eight electric hookups are spread across most zones, though only one box sits in each — packing an extension cord and a three-phase adapter is a good idea. Entry is gated and opens only for registered vehicles, so booking is required and you'll need your licence plate on the form. The service building has restrooms, showers, a washing machine, and a drying closet; there's a smaller WC to the south. There are no set cooking facilities, but you can wash dishes at sinks beside the building. The campground runs from late May to early November, closing over winter, with exact dates depending on the snow. Reception sits by the entry road and staffs the evenings in summer.
Camping cards can save you money if you're spending multiple nights in the tent. Do the math.
