Ásbyrgi - Vesturdalur
About
Vesturdalur is a natural, tents-only campsite inside Jökulsárgljúfur, near Ásbyrgi in north Iceland. There's no electricity and no hot water — just toilets, dishwashing and a warden on hand in high season. You pay the rangers on site rather than booking. Usually open early June to mid-September.
Vesturdalur is a bare-bones, tent-only site in a natural setting within the Jökulsárgljúfur area. There's no electricity and no hot water, phone coverage is patchy, and you won't find hookups or a service block — just toilets and somewhere to do the dishes. You don't reserve a spot here; fees are paid to the rangers on site. In high season a warden is around through the day and can fill you in on the park, its nature and walking trails. Guided information walks set off each afternoon from the Hljóðaklettar car park. The site sits off Road 862, the now-paved Dettifoss Road, so the Dettifoss waterfall, Hólmatungur and Hljóðaklettar are all within reach. The information centre at Ásbyrgi is 14 km away. It's closed in winter.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
