Hlíð, Mývatni
About
Hlíð is a campsite about a kilometre from Lake Mývatn in north Iceland, on ground of grass, lava formations, and sheltered hollows. Its distance from the water means noticeably fewer midges than other Mývatn sites. There's a small shop at reception and a large kitchen tent for cooking.
Hlíð's best trick is what it doesn't have: midges. Sitting about a kilometre back from Lake Mývatn, with little dense vegetation, it draws far fewer of them than sites closer to the water — a real consideration around Mývatn. The ground is varied, mixing grassy fields with lava formations and sheltered hollows that cut the wind. There are quiet lava nooks for a couple of tents and open stretches big enough for groups. Facilities are well sorted: several washing stations running hot and cold, a pair of toilet buildings, and its own shower block. A small shop at reception sells snacks, soft drinks, dairy, and postcards, and there's a large kitchen tent to cook and eat under. Electricity is available across the site.
Camping cards can save you money if you're spending multiple nights in the tent. Do the math.
