About

Heiðarbær is a family site on Route 87 between Húsavík and Mývatn in north Iceland. There's a swimming pool, hot tub, and a restaurant serving pizzas, burgers, and ice cream. The playground has a bouncy castle. Ásbyrgi, Goðafoss, and Mývatn all sit within a short drive.

Heiðarbær runs on Route 87, roughly midway between Húsavík and Mývatn, which puts a lot of the northeast within reach — Goðafoss around 29 km off, Mývatn about 33 km, Ásbyrgi some 40 km away. Families get plenty to work with. There's a swimming pool and hot tub, a restaurant and bar turning out pizzas, burgers, light meals, ice cream, and coffee, and a playground with a bouncy castle, swings, and football goals. Just across the road is Hveravellir, an old horticultural station selling vegetables on weekdays, and Ystihver, which the site describes as the largest hot spring in North Iceland — close enough to walk to. The season runs mid-June to the end of August.

Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
