Kópasker

North Iceland, Icelandfrom 2,000 ISK/night4 facilities

About

Kópasker's campsite sits right at the entrance to the village, on a patch sheltered from wind on every side but the south. Facilities are basic — a service house with two sinks, a shower and a toilet, plus a coal barbecue and picnic tables. The village itself has a shop, bank, pharmacy and golf.

One thing to know up front: electricity here is limited. There are only a few hookups and access can't be guaranteed, and getting a caravan onto the grass is tricky — though you can park on the paved level next to it. With that said, the setting is sheltered and easygoing. The site sits just below the road at the village entrance, protected from wind on all sides except the south. There's a coal barbecue, picnic tables and a place to hang washing. Kópasker itself has the essentials covered — a bank, pharmacy, health care, a shop, and the Skerjakolla store and restaurant. There's a 9-hole golf course, a playground and walking paths mapped at the site. In good weather seals haul out on the shore and the birdlife picks up. Ásbyrgi and Dettifoss are both within reach for a day out.

Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
