A Highland site on grass beside the Landmannahellir huts, on the banks of the Helliskvísl stream. It takes up to 50 tents and keeps things basic — flush toilets, showers and an outdoor barbecue. You reach it by the F225 mountain road, and fishing permits and hut beds are sold on site.
Landmannahellir puts you deep in the Highlands, on a grassy stretch beside the mountain huts and the Helliskvísl stream. Getting there means the Dómadalsleið mountain road, the F225 — from Route 1 it's roughly 50 km on Road 26, then about 30 km more on the F-road. The site holds up to 50 tents and keeps facilities simple: flush toilets, showers and an outdoor barbecue. There's an old stone shepherd's hut you're welcome to use for meals or shelter, and beds in one of the eight mountain huts can be booked if you'd rather not camp. Anglers can buy permits on site for the lakes south of the Tungnaá River. Mostly, though, this is a launch pad for hiking the colourful mountains around Landmannaafréttur. It opens late June and runs to mid-September.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
