Hella – Gaddstaðaflatir

What sets Gaddstaðaflatir apart is the horses. The campsite sits inside a riding area with an indoor hall, and it hosts the annual country tournament for the Icelandic horse. The ground is roomy, with a new toilet house and a service building where you can cook and sit down to eat. It's a little way out of Hella, but the swimming pool, shops, and other services are still an easy hop. To find it, take the road beside Stracta hotel signed for Gaddastaðaflatir; the site is on your left after a couple of hundred metres. There's electricity, cooking facilities, and Wi-Fi. Dogs on leads are fine. The season runs from June to mid-September.

Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
