Þykkvibær's campsite is a quiet one, set about 16 km off Route 1 near Hella. The distance from the ring road is the point — it's calm out here. The owners take pride in keeping the place clean, and the facilities are straightforward: toilets and a washing-up area, both with hot and cold water, plus electricity and waste disposal for motorhomes. Children are well looked after, with swings, a bouncy pillow and a football field to run around on. Dogs are welcome as long as they're on a leash. It's a simple, tidy base for a night in the south rather than a resort — and sometimes that's exactly what you want.
