About

Skaftafell is a large, green campsite in the south, split into several smaller areas — some with electric hook-ups for vans, three reserved for tents only. It's open all year, though only two areas stay open through winter. Vehicle access runs 07:00 to 23:00. Walking trails suit every level.

The draw is the walking. Skaftafell's trails spread out in every direction and suit everyone from casual strollers to serious hikers, and the site itself is roomy and sheltered by vegetation. It's one of the few campsites open through winter, though only areas A and C stay open in the cold months to protect the rest. Worth knowing: the outdoor sinks are shut off in winter to avoid frost damage, with frost-free conditions usually returning after mid-May. Cars can enter only between 07:00 and 23:00. The nearby visitor centre has a service desk, food, a souvenir shop, a post box and free internet. Quiet hours run overnight, dogs are welcome on a leash, and collecting firewood inside the national park isn't allowed.

Camping cards can save you money if you're spending multiple nights in the tent. Do the math.
