Kerlingarfjöll - Highland Base
About
Kerlingarfjöll's campsite sits in the Ásgarður valley by the Ásgarðsá river, in Iceland's Central Highlands, as part of the Highland Base complex. It has a service house and access to the Highland Base restaurant and baths. Reached via the F347, it's open mid-June to end of September. Pre-booking is advised.
Kerlingarfjöll's campsite sits deep in the Central Highlands, in the Ásgarður valley on the banks of the Ásgarðsá river, at the edge of the mountain range. It runs from 15 June to 30 September and takes tents, campers, trailers, and cars with rooftop tents. What separates it from most highland sites is the Highland Base next door. Campers get a service house with the basics — toilets, showers, a kitchen, an outdoor grill — plus access to the restaurant's buffet meals and, if you book in the lobby, the Highland Base Baths. Children camp free. Getting there is a commitment: about 200 km from Reykjavík, roughly three and a half hours, mostly on gravel via Route 35 and the F347. Check your car is cleared for F-roads, and book ahead — demand is high.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
