About
Reykholt's campsite occupies three large, tree-sheltered areas in the village, dotted with small groves. A playground, cooking facilities and a shower are on site, with a swimming pool, football field, restaurant and shop all a short walk away, in a town of about 200.
The village grew up around geothermal heat, and its geyser Reykholtshver still erupts every ten minutes, pushing up hot water that warms local houses and greenhouses. It's an unusual neighbour for a tent. As a base, it puts you a short drive from Geysir, Gullfoss, Flúðir and Laugarvatn, with the Slakki petting zoo about 15 minutes away. Friðheimar and a couple of eateries sit within walking distance. One house rule worth knowing: guests not travelling with families need to be 25 or older, which keeps things calm. Children camp free, and there's a swimming pool, washing machine and Wi-Fi for anyone settling in for a night or two.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
