Fossatún

About

At Fossatún, trolls are the theme — a troll park, troll games and troll books by the owners — on the banks of the Grímsá between Borgarnes and Reykholt in West Iceland. Camping sits alongside sleeping-bag, guesthouse and hotel rooms, plus a restaurant. Best for families and small groups.

Fossatún sits halfway between Borgarnes and Reykholt in Borgarfjörður, on the banks of the Grímsá near Blundsvatn, with the mountains Skarðheiðin and Baula filling the skyline. The hook is the Trollagarður — a troll and folklore trail with games like troll-foot and troll-kick, built for family-friendly fun outdoors. The owners are troll-book authors and musicians, and it shows in the place. Access to the Troll Park comes with a campsite stay. The site suits families, individuals and small groups rather than big gatherings, and shares the grounds with sleeping-bag, guesthouse and hotel options. On-site there's mini-golf, hot tubs, a trampoline, a giant outdoor grill and good washing facilities. The Rock 'n' Troll Kaffi restaurant handles meals. Check-in runs from mid-afternoon; the minimum age to book is 20.

Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
