Þórisstaðir is a large, family-friendly campsite in west Iceland, laid out in four areas beside a lake. There are no showers or indoor kitchen — just restrooms and outdoor cold-water sinks — but fishing across three nearby lakes and a football pitch keep it lively. Open May to August.
Let's be straight: there are no showers at Þórisstaðir, and since 2022 there's no indoor kitchen or dining hall either. The main area sits down by the lake with restrooms and outdoor sinks running cold water. The nearest pool is a short drive at Hlaðir. The site splits into four areas. The largest holds 50-plus caravans, 32 with electric hookups; a second suits groups and connects to a hall seating close to 200. The other two are group sites as well, so booking ahead by contacting the site matters here. Fishing is the real draw — three lakes, Eyrarvatn, Þórisstaðavatn and Geitabergsvatn, are all within reach, and there's a sandpit and football pitch for the kids. The season runs May to August.
Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
