Campsites in West Iceland

The Snæfellsnes verdict is the Vegagerðin feed joined to the loop’s real road segments — the same source and logic as our can-I-drive page for the peninsula. The feed reports only stretches with a notable condition, so “no reported problems” is the authority’s statement, not our assumption; a dead feed says so rather than showing green.

Distances are straight-line kilometres from Austurvöllur in central Reykjavík, computed from each campsite’s own coordinates — not drive times. The gap is largest around Hvalfjörður, where the tunnel cuts a long fjord out of the journey, and on outer Snæfellsnes, where the road runs around the headland.

Rates, seasons and facilities are the operator’s own, via tjalda.is. A dash under price means no current price card, not a free site. Where the season wording cannot be read as dates — or was last published for an earlier year, as at Arnarstapi, Hellissandur and Ólafsvík — the verdict column says “not stated” rather than treating an old year’s dates as this year’s. Thirteen sites are listed as West Iceland but are not in it

This is worth stating plainly, because we found it in our own data. Of the 50 campsite records carrying a West Iceland tag, 13 sit somewhere else when you check the coordinates the record itself carries. Four are in the Westfjords, four in Húnaþing in the north-west, and four on the South Coast or the Golden Circle. They are not on the list above, and here is where each one actually is.

Every one of them keeps its own page and its own contact details — the campsites are real, the region label is what is wrong. We are showing the correction rather than quietly deleting the rows, because the same mislabelling runs through most Icelandic camping listings: search “camping West Iceland” and the results mix in Rauðasandur and Ísafjörður without noticing.

The practical version: West Iceland is Hvalfjörður to the Dalir, including Snæfellsnes — one to three hours from Reykjavík on good road. The Westfjords are a separate peninsula, about five hours away over Route 60, with passes that close in winter. If you booked a Rauðasandur pitch thinking it was an easy evening out of the city, you have a long drive coming.
