Campsites in South Iceland
Every site between Þorlákshöfn and Öræfi, listed west to east in the order you drive past them — with what the operator publishes about season and price, and whether the road there is open today.
South Iceland has 76 campsites with verified coordinates — more than any other region — running from Þorlákshöfn and Selfoss in the west to Skaftafell and Öræfi in the east. 27 of them publish an opening season, 23 of those are open today (27 July 2026), and 4 stay open all year. Published adult rates run 1,500–3,500 ISK per person per night.

| Corridor | Distance | Drive time | Live verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| South Coast to Vík | 186 km | ~2.5 h one way | Good to go |
| Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon | 370 km | ~4.5–5 h one way | Good to go |
Verdicts come from the Vegagerðin feed joined to each corridor’s real road segments — the same source and the same logic as our can-I-drive pages. The feed only reports stretches with a notable condition, so “no reported problems” is the authority’s own statement, not our assumption. If the feed is unreachable the row says so rather than showing a green light.

Distances are straight-line kilometres from Austurvöllur in central Reykjavík, computed from each campsite’s own coordinates — not drive times. The road adds to every one of them, and adds most in the east: Skaftafell is about 200 km in a straight line and over 320 km by Route 1.
Rates, seasons and facilities are the operator’s own, via tjalda.is. A dash under price means there is no current price card, not that the site is free. Where the season wording cannot be read as dates — or was last published for an earlier year — the verdict column says “not stated” instead of guessing on the operator’s behalf. Facilities shown are the 7 that decide a night in a campervan; each site’s own page lists the rest.
One further record carries the South Iceland tag but no usable coordinates: Vatnsholt — its longitude is missing from the source data, so it cannot be placed on the map or measured, and it is left out of the table rather than shown at a guessed position.

The list above mixes two kinds of campsite. Everything along Route 1 — Selfoss, Hella, Hvolsvöllur, Skógar, Vík, Kirkjubæjarklaustur, Skaftafell — is reachable in any car, on tarmac, all the way to the gate. The sites in Þórsmörk and around Landmannalaugar are not: Básar, Slyppugil, Langidalur, Emstrur, Álftavatn, Hvanngil, Landmannahellir, Hólaskjól and Strútur all sit beyond F-roads, and several of the approaches include unbridged river crossings.
That is a legal distinction, not a comfort one. F-roads are closed to two-wheel-drive vehicles, rental contracts void the insurance if you drive one, and the roads open late — typically June, sometimes later after a heavy winter. Our F-road pages carry the live open/closed status for each of them, and the campsite map guide shows the whole country’s seasons side by side.
The one thing worth planning around in this region is water rather than road. The South Coast is where Iceland’s rain lands: Vík and Kirkjubæjarklaustur are among the wettest inhabited places in the country, and a tent pitched in the open near Skógar or Vík takes the full Atlantic wind. The sheltered sites — Þakgil in its valley, Hamragarðar under the cliff, the Þórsmörk sites in the birch — are the ones that stay pleasant when the forecast turns.
