About
Camping on Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar islands, reached by the Herjólfur ferry from Landeyjahöfn in about 35 minutes. Two sites — Herjólfsdalur and Þórsheimili — offer showers, cooking areas and playgrounds. The island has a golf course, swimming pool, restaurants and the Eldheimar eruption museum. Open May to September.
This campsite spreads across two spots on Heimaey — Herjólfsdalur and Þórsheimili — the largest and only inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar group. You get there on the Herjólfur ferry from Landeyjahöfn, a crossing of roughly 35 minutes, running several times a day. Both sites have service centres with showers, cooking areas and dining space, with electricity, laundry and dryers available for an extra fee. There are playgrounds for children, and it's run as a family area with quiet hours overnight. The island earns a longer stay. It carries the story of the 1973 Heimaey eruption, which buried a third of the town and is told at the Eldheimar museum. There's a golf course, a swimming pool, restaurants and shops, plus summer festivals including Þjóðhátíð. Dogs are welcome but not off the leash.
Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
