About
Herjólfsdalur campsite lies in a valley on Heimaey in the Vestmannaeyjar islands, ringed by a horseshoe-shaped mountain that blocks the wind. There's a service house for cooking and washing, plus a playground. Reached by ferry from Landeyjarhöfn or by flight from Reykjavík. Open May to September.
A horseshoe of mountain wraps the Herjólfsdalur valley, and that shape is the point — it gives the campsite real shelter from the wind. It's on Heimaey, the one inhabited island in the Vestmannaeyjar group. Facilities cover a service house with cooking and washing space, toilets and showers included in the rates, a playground, and electricity for campers and mobile homes. The season runs from the start of May to the end of September. Getting there is part of the trip. A ferry sails from Landeyjarhöfn in about 35 minutes, and there are daily flights from Reykjavík. Heimaey has around 4,000 residents and full services — plus the lava from the 1973 eruption, when the island was evacuated for months.
Wild camping rules have tightened. Use designated campsites to stay on the right side of the law.
