Eyrarbakki
About
Eyrarbakki campsite sits west of this old south-coast village, quiet, close to the sea and a bird sanctuary. A new service building has showers and toilets, with a separate kitchen and dining building — but no washer or dryer. Open until 1 October; children free.
Eyrarbakki is a small village on the south shore, heavy on history: well-preserved old houses, two museums by the church — a county folk museum in a former traders' house, and a sea museum next door — and the church's altarpiece painted by Queen Louise. The campsite is on the west side of town, a quiet spot with good paths into the village. It has cold and hot water, electricity and a children's playground. A new service building brought showers, and a separate building holds a kitchen and dining area. There's no washing machine or dryer, so plan laundry elsewhere. A slow wander round the village — the old houses, the local galleries and shops, the Rauða húsið restaurant for coffee or dinner — is the main event. Open until 1 October, children stay free.
Camping cards can save you money if you're spending multiple nights in the tent. Do the math.
