Iceland campsite map

Updated 25 July 2026Camping

Every campsite in the country on one live map — and, unlike a printed map, the published season for each one so you can tell what is actually open when you get there.

Short answer

We map 315 campsites in Iceland. Of the 135 that publish an opening season, 112 are open today (27 July 2026), and 23 say they stay open all year. The rest close for winter and reopen in spring. The map below is interactive — zoom, pan and tap straight through to any site — and the table further down lists each published season as text, so you can check a date rather than squint at a colour-coded picture. The 180 campsites with no published season are on the map too; we simply do not claim a season we have not been given.

“Open today” counts only campsites whose published season is unambiguous enough to check against a date — 112 of the 135 published ones. The other 23 publish something we will not turn into a yes or no (“open until the ground freezes”, or a season last published for an earlier year); they appear in the table below with their own wording instead of a verdict. Seasons come from tjalda.is, the Icelandic campsite register, and are only as current as the operator keeps them.

Facilities are as recorded by tjalda.is and OpenStreetMap, and some sites list none. Opening seasons aren't shown here because the source data for them is inconsistent and in places years out of date — check the campsite's own page or call ahead before you rely on one being open.

Season text is reproduced as the operator publishes it, via tjalda.is — including the ones that are vague, and the handful still showing an earlier year’s dates. That is deliberate: a paraphrase would read cleaner and tell you less. Where a season is dated to a past year we say so in the cell and give no verdict. The remaining 180 campsites publish no season at all, so they are not in this table — find them on the map or in the full directory.

A published season is a plan, not a promise. Highland sites in particular open late and close early depending on snow, and the road to them can be shut long after the campsite says it is open — check today’s road conditions before committing to a highland night.

Frequently
asked questions

How many campsites are there in Iceland?
We map 315 of them — the tjalda.is register of organised campsites plus campsites recorded in OpenStreetMap. Rental-company maps usually quote "over 200", which is the count of sites in their own curated selection rather than the full register. Every one of the 315 has its own page here with location, facilities and whatever the operator publishes about season and price.
Which campsites in Iceland are open right now?
The open-today table above is computed from each campsite's own published season, so it changes with the date you read this page. It only counts campsites whose published season is unambiguous — a site that publishes "open until the ground freezes", or whose last published season was for an earlier year, is listed but given no verdict, because guessing on its behalf would be inventing an answer.
Is there one map with every Icelandic campsite on it?
Yes — the interactive map on this page. It is the same map that carries our other 7,000-plus places, filtered to campsites, so you can zoom, pan and tap through to any site. It is a live map rather than a downloadable image, which is what most campervan companies offer.
Do I need to book an Icelandic campsite in advance?
Most take drop-ins and do not require booking, which is why campervan travel works so well here. The exceptions are the busy summer weekends in the popular spots — Reykjavík, Þórsmörk, Landmannalaugar, Skaftafell — and any site running an event. Each campsite page shows whether the operator accepts pre-booking.
Are Iceland campsites open in winter?
A minority are. The all-year count in the table above is taken from campsites that explicitly publish an all-year season; the rest close somewhere between mid-September and the end of October and reopen in May. Outside the summer window, check the individual campsite page and phone ahead — a published winter season is not the same as an unstaffed gate being open in a snowstorm.
Can I just park up and sleep anywhere instead?
No. Staying overnight in a campervan, motorhome or caravan outside an organised campsite has been against the law in Iceland since 2015, and the narrow tent exception does not cover vehicles. This is the single most expensive misunderstanding a camping trip here can make; the camping-rules guide sets out exactly what the law says.
