Garðskagi

The Garðskagi site sits out at the point, between its two lighthouses, right on the Atlantic edge. It's one of Iceland's better birdwatching spots, whales often pass close offshore, and walking trails follow the two very different coastlines either side of the headland. Be clear on what it is: a low-service campsite. You get 24-hour toilets, hot and cold water, a sink for washing up, a waste dump point and electricity for campers. There are no showers, no washing machines and no indoor areas. What it does have nearby is the Röstin restaurant, a museum with shows, and the lighthouses themselves. It's open all year — pay at Röstin during opening hours or online. Children stay free, and there's always room, so small groups can just turn up.

Book ahead in summer, especially near popular spots. Campsites fill up by late afternoon.
